On the 24th of August 2019 solemn opening of plane Tu-144 monument was held
Today in Zhukovsky the monument to the plane Tu-144, which is installed near the gateway to the town (on the crossing of Tupoleva street and Tupoleva highway) was opened. Here the solemn event with the involvement of pilots, engineers, employees of town-forming enterprises and other organizations, government representatives and caring citizens was held. Su-30, MiG-35D and Tu-95 airplanes greeted guests in the sky. The solemn event was started off by the mayor of Zhukovsky Yury Prokhorov.
“I congratulate you with this outstanding event – today we write a new page in the history of our town together. Pilots, engineers and citizens have lately dreamt of creating a monument to the plane Tu-144. It is not just a flying vehicle, it is a symbol of achievements of Russian aeronautical science. Tu-144 became the first supersonic jetliner in the world”, – said Yury Vyacheslavovich.
Yury Prokhorov thanked the governor of Moscow region Andrey Yuryevich Vorobyev and the State Duma Deputy Lidia Nikolaevna Antonova for the support. The authors of the concept of the project are Research and Engineering Company, charity fund The legends of aviation and city authorities. Town organizations, volunteers and citizens also took part in realization of the project.
Airplane Tu-144 was designed in Tupolev design bureau, flight testing was held on Gromov Flight Research Institute airfield. On the 31st of December 1968 it was firstly brought to the sky by the crew team of research pilot E.V. Elyan.
We remind that on the 16th of July the plane was dragged to the installation site from the territory of Gromov Flight Research Institute, where the restoration work was held. Tu-144 was painted in colours of Soviet Aeroflot. On the 10th of August the plane was lifted on the support gantries.
